Heart Block Treatment: Tradition and Technology

Heart Block Treatment traditional In healthy people, the heart beats about 60 to 100 times per minute. The type of heart cells called the sinoatrial node keeps the time. In people with altered physical health, a condition of the heart – heart block arises. Heart block with its scientific name, bradycardia, is the slow beating of the heart (less than 60 beats per minute). It occurs when the beat produced by the upper chambers of the heart cannot pass to the lower chambers of the heart. Technically it is called AV block.

Heart Block Treatment traditional is of three degrees. In the first-degree heart block, the conduction of the heartbeat from the upper chambers to the lower chambers is slower than normal (it takes more than 0.2 seconds). In second-degree heart block, some heartbeats are dropped while passing from the heart’s upper chambers to lower chambers. And in the third-degree of heart block, the upper and lower chambers go totally out of synchronization. Impulses from the upper do not pass to the lower chambers and the lower chambers produce separate impulses. This is called a total heart block. The blood is pumped at a slower rate and inefficiently during a heart block.

There are techniques that can improve the health of the heart. Generally, the heart block of the first degree does not require any treatment or therapy. The second-degree conditions may require a pacemaker if the situation goes critical. The severe forms of heart block (all third-degree situations) are treated with a permanent pacemaker. The pacemaker takes the place of the sinus node. Alternatively, it maintains the heartbeat despite a blockage in the body’s pumping center. In a pacemaker, a thin coated lead (wire) is inserted through a vein, and the electrode tip of the lead is placed in one of the upper or the lower chambers of the heart attached by its lining. In a double chamber pacemaker, two lead systems are used – one electrode is placed in the atrium and another tip is placed in the ventricle. The electronic circuitry of the pacemaker is encased in the pulse generator and is attached to the lead electrode. It is usually placed in the chest just under the skin.
